It was developed by postgraduates at the Universities of Durham and Oxford, in order to create a central resource for graduate researchers that provides information, networks and opportunities - all in one place. Since its launch in May, over 12,000 researchers have created profiles and nearly one million pages have been viewed. INTAS project submitting

ADS has submitted a project in the cooperation with the European political science network (epsNet), IFYS foundation and with the Central European University that aims to provide grants for the beginning university faculty from the former Soviet union in order to attend the workshop and training for the first-time university teachers of political science in Budapest, June 2006.

Increase of the salary tariff

A decree of the Slovak government No. 204/2005 (part 90) published in code, has been issued with legal force from 1st July 2005. The decree lays down changed salary tariff of public servants which also refers to the PhD. students. According to the new decree, the monthly scholarship of the full-time PhD. students (before taxation and levies) should be 12,310 SKK (315 EUR) before dissertation degree exam and 14,220 SKK after successful passing of it.

New ADS project

20th May 2005: ADS has submitted a new project in the project scheme Interreg Slovakia - Hungary - Ukraine "Training for the first-time university teachers" together with the Hungarian partner organization IFYS. The results of the project are expected in October 2005.

The taxation of the doctoral scholarship - success!

In May 2005 ADS made an important achievement in the issue of the taxation of doctoral scholarships. According to the amendment of the Act on Universities from November 2003, the scholarships of full-time PhD. students in the year 2004 should not be taxed. In spite of this amendment, a lot of schools and institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences taxed scholarships in the first five months of 2004. Subsequently, some institutions returned taxes to the inceptors directly. On the other hand, there were some institutions which did not return taxes and the following year the PhD. students had to ask for tax return the Tax Office. The Tax Office considered the arguments of ADS relevant, admitted that in 2004 the scholarships were not supposed to be taxed and the overpayments returned back to the PhD. students. (Some returns reached more than 14,000 SKK - 360 EUR.)

Trainings for first-time University teachers

In May 2005 the Ministry of Education evaluated the project submitted by the Slovak PhD. Students' Association in cooperation with the NGOs "AKO" and "LDP" ESF scheme. Project is focused on trainings of PhD. students - beginning University teachers - to train them on teaching. After sending necessary additional information to the Ministry (mostly changes of the budget) and after discussing particulars of the project, the project is supposed to start in October 2005.

The petition to the Ministry - improvement of the present situation of full-time PhD. students

25the May 2005: a petition was sent to the Minister of Education Mr. Martin Fronc on behalf of the Slovak PhD students with the aim to stop the taxation of scholarships for the full-time doctoral students. Petition has been signed by 373 PhD. students. Meanwhile the petition has been sent also to some relevant Slovak media.

Participation of the representative of ADS at the negotiations about the application of the Lisboa strategy for Slovakia

22nd March 2005: ADS representative Martin Plesch participated at the negotiations about the science and state administration, i.e. the preparation of a material for the application of Lisboa strategy in Slovakia. The material is supposed to be negotiated by the Slovak government on March 31st 2005. The ADS got the promise that its comments to this material shall be accepted. (We suggest changing the way of financing PhDs and postdocs, moreover changing the legislative status of PhDs and postdocs and putting into effect the new system for their outcome evaluations.)

The ADS attitude to the declaration of the challenge from The Agency for the Support of Science and Technology (AVPT) for young scientists

22nd March 2005: the ADS was asked by the representative of the Agency Dr. Ftáčniková to suggest prior areas in which PhD researchers should be supported. The proposal of ADS is included in the letter which was sent to the Agency (available in Slovak). ADS proposed to issue the first call for applications without setting prior areas and to set them by the second call when considering the standard measurable criteria (number and quality of publications, citations, patents etc.), furthermore when bearing in mind areas in which young scientists where awarded the title "Young scientists of the year" and priorities of the development Slovak science and technology. Moreover, ADS suggested postponing the deadline for applications in order PhDs who are at the time abroad could apply (at least 4 months since the issuing the call for applications).
